The Switched on Schoolhouse Curriculum is a computer software program for grades three through twelve published by Alpha Omega Publications. It is a Christian home school curriculum which includes traditional student lessons and multimedia features such as video and animation.
The basic subjects—Bible, history & geography, science, math, and language arts—are offered separately or as an entire program for the grade levels covered. Electives such as foreign languages, GED Test preparation, computer, and select literature, math, and history programs are also available.
These long-time publishers of homeschool curriculum have developed an interactive and stimulating program that can be suited to your student’s personal needs. Student assignments can be added or deleted if necessary for your child. Homeschool lessons are taught until mastery is gained and are evaluated with quizzes and tests.
Some of the strengths of this computer program include: an automatic update feature, on-screen student resource aids, practice games, and easy lesson planning and recordkeeping for student and parent-teacher. Students who enjoy the computer will feel "right at home" with this self-paced, instructional method.
Some less favorable aspects of this program include potential compatibility or installation errors, required computer for student lessons, and very limited review of previous topics covered. Although some of the student coursework can be printed or read aloud, students who dislike reading on the computer may not find this to be a good mode of learning.
Alpha Omega's computer curriculum is a complete homeschool curriculum that can be easily adapted to many different learning styles. The entertaining games and interactive format make it enjoyable for most students. Parents also enjoy the fact that once installed, the program is pretty easy to manage and record keeping can be easily done.
